Cake
1 c butter
2 c sugar
3 eggs
2 c flour
2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp allspice
1/4 tsp nutmeg
2 tsp baking soda
4 c chopped apples
1 c nuts
Sauce
2 c sugar
3 c boiling water
2 Tbsp corn starch
2 Tbsp flour
1 c canned milk
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp vanilla
1 1/2 Tbsp butter
Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees F.
For cake: Cream butter & 2 c sugar. Add eggs and beat well. Add flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and spices, stirring to combine. Add apples and nuts and pour into large dripper pan. Bake for 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, to make the sauce, carmelize 1 c sugar, then add boiling water, remaining sugar, corn starch, and flour. Cook until clear. Place in double-boiler and add remaining ingredients, stirring frequently.
Serve cake with sauce drizzled over the top. This sauce is also good on carrot pudding.
